Artist Statement

Movement and play are universal non-verbal forms of communication, they aide us in emotional expression, health maintenance and soul nourishment. My work is not only guided by these principles, but also by the means by which I explore them. I intentionally begin my paintings without an objective, choosing to focus on process over product. To release myself from an end result grants me the freedom to explore the boundless nature of abstraction. I confront the oppressive blank canvas with oil paint. I dilute to a stain, drip and swish the color around the surface until a unique line or shape is revealed. This process provides clues to the direction the painting will evolve and establishes the painting’s foundation in movement.

An integral part of my process is to explore the relationship between myself and my materials. I primarily work in oil paint. The rich colors and luscious textures exude a flexible atmosphere that invites me to become entwined in the act of painting. I playfully explore by infusing a variety of brilliant colors, unique paint tools, and audio background noise into my process. Experimenting with different paint mediums and textures amplifies my excitement at building different layers in the work.

My work is evidence of my process. My vision is to offer the viewer a reprieve from the chaos of the outside world into a visual meditation.
